Happy New Year’s Eve folks!

The over-looming threat of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 might be a damper on your planned NYE shenanigans, but that shouldn’t stop you from kicking it back and putting on some classic tunes to cap 2021 off 🎶

This year has personally been defining for me, as I started this newsletter and building a social network for music around it back in April, and despite having its fair share of ups and downs, with 90+ editions so far over 8 months, our content efforts are finally falling into place ✅

This wouldn’t have been possible without you guys sucking it up every Friday morning and reading this piece, so if you feel this has been of any value to you, please help support us and give us a shoutout wherever you like

We also launched our first version of the product in September, a simple tool to share and discover playlists across Spotify and Apple Music.

While this is hardly close to the product we want to build, the learnings from users actually testing our v1, and understanding their pain-points around music were invaluable; a lot of which were used in building out the next version of our product ⏯

The Come-Back of Vinyls 📈

Back in May, we covered how the classic format seemed to be making a come-back, inspired by the retro nostalgia of the 80s and 90s 🤘🏻

Vinyl records have long been associated with the middle-age collectors who have a knack for hour-long LPs, but Gen Z seems to be developing an impressive taste for this format.

How does data back this up?

Thanks to Swedish band ABBA’s comeback album- ‘Voyage’ and Adele’s ‘30’, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) noted that 5 Million Vinyl Records were sold the past year, the highest in over 30 years 🚀

ABBA’s comeback record, Voyage was released on 5th November and saw 30,000 vinyls shipped out within the opening week.

The crazy part?

There’s been a shortage of sorts owing to the breakneck demand of Vinyls

A report recently blamed Adele for the shortage of Vinyl when the pre-orders for her album ‘30’ blocked a lot of other artists from printing their records 🖨

Ed Sheeran told Australian radio hosts Kyle & Jackie O about getting his recent album ‘=’ pressed

“So you have to do it like really upfront — and Adele had basically booked out all the vinyl factories, so we had to get a slot and get our album in there.

It was like me, Coldplay, Adele, Taylor [Swift], ABBA, Elton [John]: all of us were trying to get our vinyl printed at the same time.”

With Sony Music reportedly ordering some 500,000 copies of vinyl records for the album’s release, it’s put a squeeze on an already tight supply chain⛓

Supply Chain issues might have probably been one of the biggest talking points of 2021, but who knew that Adele’s Vinyl records were also queuing up in line 😅

That’s it for today, this week and this year ✅

See you guys on the other side! Have a good one 🍻
